The Oakland Public Schools

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year!

The Oakland Board of Education would like to take this opportunity to thank the community, administrative staff, teachers, Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs) and the Oakland Education Foundation for their continued support and strong partnership with the Oakland School District. Collectively, your efforts are benefitting 1750 children.

Even with a tough fiscal year ahead, the Oakland School District has been able to improve our facilities by refinishing the floors in our gymnasiums and Wood Shop, repairing roof supports in Valley Middle School’s 1930’s building, replacing a compressor, upgrading the Energy Management System, and, pumping and repairing the septic systems at all schools. Our continued partnerships with the PTOs has enabled us to bring thirteen (13) new SMART Boards to the District, which we believe will further enhance learning and bring even more excitement to the classroom. The Oakland Education Foundation’s tireless efforts on behalf of the children of Oakland have provided the District with funds to completely renovate our Valley Middle School Science Lab and create a new state of the art facility for learning. This ongoing project will be completed in the Summer of 2011.

During the summer, our talented custodial staff has completed numerous projects to improve our classrooms and facilities. This professional staff continues to find ways to improve our facilities with very little expense to the District, by using their talents collectively to make much needed improvements and upgrades.
Our Administrators and teachers have worked to create an exciting curriculum for the upcoming year - one that will continue to challenge young minds and provide parents with the assurance that their children are in the best environment for learning.

Hopefully this Calendar/Handbook will help keep you informed of the activities occurring in our schools. In addition, the District’s (oaklandschoolsnj.org) always has updated information.

I encourage you to become an active participant in your child’s education. Become part of your child’s school PTO, volunteer your time & talents, and most importantly stay informed of the happenings not only in your school, but within the District. Help make this an even better place for children to learn and grow.
