• Inclement Weather Information

We understand that the decision to close or delay school due to inclement weather has a significant impact on families. Our top priority is the safety of our students’ and staff. After careful consideration of all relevant factors including: discussions with Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, district contracted bussing service, FLOW District constituents, Oakland Chief of Police, and Oakland DPW, road conditions at that time, weather forecasts, custodial staff regarding status of safety of school grounds, the decision to close or delay school is made by the Superintendent of Schools in full partnership with all of these individuals.  Your understanding and support is appreciated.

Oakland K-8 Public Schools works closely with our Regional High School to align school closures during inclement weather days.  There may be occasions where the High School and or the Pre-K -8 may have different situations where either school will need follow an adjusted schedule due to different circumstances at the respective district. (i.e power outages, Pipes bursting, flooding, transportation issues, etc.)

It is always our goal to provide families with as much advanced notice as possible however there are occasions when a decision cannot be made until early morning hours as we rely on our local weather forecasters for key information.

Keeping you informed is always a priority. In case of inclement weather or a mechanical breakdown, schools may have a delayed opening, need to close or have an early dismissal.  Oakland School District’s web site will post inclement weather announcements. Text, Email & Voice messages are sent out through our emergency notification phone system, “Reverse 911”. Parents are responsible for indicating how they want to receive notifications in the Parent Portal through Realtime.

If serious weather conditions develop, we may need to close school early.  Please be sure your child’s school has an emergency number that we can use if school is closed early.

We encourage parents/guardians to have an emergency back-up plan or identify an individual who will serve as an emergency contact should school and/or after-school programs be cancelled.

Your decision whether your child should remain at home will always be accepted by our school officials on inclement weather days.  Please contact your building principal with any questions.
