• Dear Parents,

Valley Middle School is a high-performing middle school and is the educational home to 557 students in grades six through eight.  The teaching staff is comprised of a team of dedicated and committed educators who believe in bringing out the best in each individual student.  They do this by balancing high expectations with a high level of support.  Additionally, the school is dedicated to providing a large variety of after-school activities, athletic events, and a comprehensive elective program to care for the unique needs of young adolescents.

At Valley Middle School we strive each year to provide common experiences for our staff and students.  These experiences are essential in forming positive relationships throughout our school.   Each year, thematic units are integrated into each grade level.  These are comprehensive interdisciplinary experiences that help to immerse students into their learning.  Each have culminating celebrations where students receive a deep understanding of each topic and share in the learning experience.

In an effort to foster an environment of cooperation and teamwork, Valley Middle School provides two, three-day over-night trip experiences.  Our seventh graders visit Frost Valley in the Catskill Mountains.   Once there, students experience mental and physical challenges to solve as a group.  They begin to develop an understanding of how positive encouragement and communication lead to success.  Our eighth grade students travel to Philadelphia.  This trip is integrated throughout our curriculum and focuses on our study of The Constitution.

The foundation of our school is built upon the strong relationships between our students, staff, the Oakland community, and the belief that we are all a vital part of the VMS family.    Our theme for the 2017 - 2018 school year is “Cherish Today, Challenge Tomorrow”.  This theme is our focal point and will be used throughout the year in our thematic units of study, in our curriculum delivery, and in our cross-curricular activities.   This theme challenges our students to be themselves and have confidence in who they are and you they are becoming.

I am very proud to be a part of the VMS family and look forward to working with you all throughout the 2016-2017 school year.  Should you have any questions or concerns please call or email me at: 201-337-8185 / desiderio@oaklandschoolsnj.org.

    Sincerely,

    Gregg J. Desiderio
