Curriculum: The elementary art program enriches the entire curriculum in so many ways. Our program's foundation is based on the State Arts Standards and National Core Arts Standards. The standards are: Production/Creative Expression, Aesthetic Perception/ Responding, Art Criticism, Art History Culture/ Connecting. All of these components, as well as incorporating Next Generation STEAM Standards, will be a part of art class and will provide a strong connection to curriculum integration.
Assessment: Each child will be evaluated on mastery of the Art Essential Knowledge and Art Skills. The rubric for grading includes: teacher observation, student responsibility, assessments and art production.
Art Portfolios: All Students will be creating and keeping an art/vocabulary portfolio. Most of the finished projects will come home during the year. Some of the student work may remain in their art portfolio to assess their growth throughout the year and will be returned during the last weeks of school. A variety of student work will be on display throughout the year in the halls and in the display case.
Class Behavior Guidelines: To maintain a safe and productive learning environment, art room guidelines have been established and reviewed with each class. Each child is expected to follow the guidelines so class time can be used for learning. Parents will be notified if their child has disrupted the learning environment. Disruption that continually reoccurs will be indicated on the student's report card.
Art education is for all students no matter what their skill level. It provides learning opportunities for everyone. Art will be a learning, encouraging and enriching part of your child's day. Please feel free to call if you have any questions: Dogwood 201-337-5822 Manito 201-337-6106. I am looking forward to a great year.
All students should have a smock for art at the start of the year. An oversized T-shirt is perfect. Please print the students name on the tag of the shirt. You may send the smock in a large Ziplock bag.
Generally, I am available at Manito on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Monday and Wednesday mornings at Dogwood to assist students that I feel are behind or struggling with their projects. From time to time, however, this may change. Please check my website for any changes and I will also inform the students when needed. A scheduled appointment will need to be arranged ahead of time.
Mission For The Class: To explore all art forms, experience different tools and materials, learn about artists,
their various styles and their place in history and make cross-curricular connections.
