Continuum of Services – Oakland Public Schools
Oakland Public Schools is committed to recognizing and nurturing the unique talents and abilities of all students. Our Gifted and Talented (G&T) Program provides a continuum of services that foster intellectual curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Through differentiated instruction and enrichment opportunities, students are encouraged to reach their full potential as independent thinkers and problem-solvers. The program emphasizes inquiry, innovation, and problem-solving while fostering the 21st-century skills students need to succeed in a rapidly changing world. The program curriculum aligns with the gifted programming standards developed by the National Association for Gifted Children.
Grades K–2: Classroom-Based Enrichment
In the primary grades, the foundation for gifted and talented education begins within the classroom. Teachers provide differentiated enrichment opportunities that promote curiosity, creative thinking, and problem-solving for all students. These classroom-based experiences help identify students’ strengths and prepare them for advanced learning opportunities in later grades. At the end of each school year, teachers provide a summary of the enrichment activities completed by each student.
Grade 3: Pull-Out Enrichment Program
Student identification for the Gifted and Talented pull-out program begins in January of Grade 3. Identified students participate in a weekly pull-out class, where they engage in advanced learning experiences designed to challenge and extend their thinking and reasoning. Instruction emphasizes project-based learning, collaboration, and creative problem-solving, encouraging students to explore ideas in depth and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.
Grades 4–5: Elementary Pull-Out Program
Identified students in Grades 4 and 5 participate in weekly enrichment sessions held at Valley Middle School. Students are transported by bus from their elementary schools to attend a two-hour class each week, where they engage in advanced learning experiences that extend beyond the core curriculum.
The program emphasizes research, communication, and innovation through cross-curricular projects and complex problem-solving challenges. These experiences are designed to foster critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and independent inquiry, helping students develop the skills and mindset needed for future academic success and lifelong learning.
Grades 6–8: Middle School Gifted Enrichment
Students identified for the Gifted and Talented Program in Grades 6 through 8 meet for four class periods each week. The middle school program builds upon the foundation established in the elementary grades, challenging students through advanced research, inquiry-based learning, and leadership development.
Instruction emphasizes 21st-century learning skills, including communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Students engage in independent and group projects that promote innovation, problem-solving, and global awareness. These experiences prepare students for future academic rigor, independent study, and success as adaptable, forward-thinking learners.
